McDull's Food-Saving Adventure

💡

Hong Kong produces about 3,600 tonnes of food waste every day — the weight of 250 double-decker buses!

1McDull loves eating pineapple buns at the cha chaan teng. One day, he sees the man at the next table dump a whole plate of roast pork rice into the bin — there was still half left! McDull's heart aches: "That rice was still edible!"

2McDull decides to investigate. He walks past the wet market, supermarkets, and bakeries, seeing perfectly good food being thrown away. McDull is so shocked his bowl of rice nearly drops: "We waste this much food every day?"

3McDull finds the Food For Good volunteers. They tell him: if everyone plans their grocery shopping carefully, stores food properly, and shares leftovers with those in need, we can greatly reduce waste!

4From that day, McDull becomes the "Food Appreciation Ambassador." He visits schools and tells children: "Cherishing food is a blessing! Every grain of rice deserves our appreciation." The children happily join McDull as food-saving heroes!

McDull Becomes a Recycling Truck Driver

💡

Sorted food waste can be turned into compost, animal feed, or even electricity!

1McDull receives a letter inviting him to be a driver for the day at Food For Good's food waste recycling centre. McDull is thrilled, puts on his uniform and jumps into the green recycling truck: "Let's go!"

2The first stop is a school. McDull watches children sort food waste into recycling bins — bones in the blue bin, vegetable leaves in the green bin, tea leaves in the brown bin. McDull gives a thumbs up: "Great sorting!"

3Next stop: the wet market. McDull helps the stall owner load unsold vegetables onto the truck. She says: "Before, we threw everything in the bin. Now we can recycle it — it's wonderful!"

4McDull drives the fully loaded truck to the processing centre. Workers sort and process the food waste: some becomes compost, some becomes animal feed, some generates electricity. McDull jumps for joy: "Food waste can become so many things!"

McDull's Leftover Magic

💡

Stale bread can become bread pudding, and vegetable scraps can be simmered into delicious stock!

1McDull opens the fridge and finds yesterday's leftover rice, a stale piece of bread, and some vegetable scraps. McDull rubs his tummy: "It'd be a shame to throw these away, but what can I make?"

2Suddenly, McDull has a brilliant idea! He turns leftover rice into crispy pan-fried rice cakes, stale bread into golden bread pudding, and vegetable scraps into a sweet, savoury stock. The kitchen fills with delicious aromas!

3Friends smell the aroma and come running: "McDull, you made such delicious food?" McDull says proudly: "These are all made from leftovers! Nothing wasted at all!"

4From then on, McDull opens a "Food Saver Kitchen" to teach everyone how to turn leftovers into delicious meals. His motto: "There's no food waste — only ingredients in the wrong place!"

McDull's Visit to the Food Waste Power Plant

💡

Food waste can produce biogas through anaerobic digestion — one tonne generates about 200 kWh of electricity!

1McDull receives a mysterious invitation: "Welcome to visit Hong Kong's most advanced food waste treatment plant!" McDull sets off with curiosity, having no idea how amazing what he's about to see will be.

2The plant manager shows McDull a giant sealed metal tank called an "anaerobic digester." He explains: "Inside, oxygen-free microorganisms eat the organic matter in food waste and release biogas — mostly methane!"

3The biogas is collected to power a turbine generator. McDull watches as light bulbs light up one by one: "Wow! Food waste can generate electricity? That's incredible!" The manager smiles: "That's right — food waste is just energy in the wrong place."

4Finally, the manager shows McDull the remaining residue after digestion — called "digestate," it's excellent fertilizer! McDull dances with joy: "Food waste becomes electricity and fertilizer — two benefits at once! I need to tell everyone!"

The Story of a Grain of Rice

💡

A grain of rice goes through sowing, transplanting, harvesting, processing, and transport before reaching your bowl — a journey of over 100 days!

1McDull finds a particularly shiny grain of rice in his bowl. Suddenly, the grain glows and takes McDull on a magical time journey! McDull sees a lush green paddy field.

2McDull sees Uncle Farmer bending over to plant seedlings in the paddy, sweating under the scorching sun. The seedlings slowly grow, through irrigation, fertilizing, and weeding, taking over a hundred days to become golden rice stalks.

3The rice stalks are harvested, dried, husked, and polished into white grains. Then they travel by boat and truck to the supermarket, where McDull's mom buys them and cooks rice at home.

4The journey ends and McDull returns to his bowl. He looks at the rice with deep emotion: "A grain of rice goes through so many people's effort to reach my bowl. I will never waste it!" From today on, McDull eats every single grain in his bowl.
