Potato Sprouted!

💡

Sprouted potatoes produce solanine and shouldn't be eaten, but you can plant them to grow new potatoes or compost them!

1Potato lives in a dark, cold kitchen cupboard. One day, he discovers green sprouts growing from his head. Potato is scared: "I've sprouted! Will my owner throw me in the trash?"

2Sure enough, the owner opens the cupboard, sees the sprouts, frowns, and picks Potato up heading for the bin. Potato squeezes his eyes shut, thinking his life is over. Suddenly, the little daughter runs over: "Daddy, don't throw it away! Teacher says sprouted potatoes can be planted!"

3The little girl plants Potato in a pot of soil. Potato feels warm and safe. After a few weeks, green leaves stretch out from the soil, and Potato sees sunlight for the first time!

4A few months later, many new potatoes grow in the pot! The little girl jumps for joy. Potato feels proud: though he has become part of the soil, his life continues in another way — nurturing new life.

Potato's Recycling Centre Diary

💡

The Food For Good Kwai Tsing Recycling Centre processes tonnes of food waste every day, transforming it into useful resources.

1Hello everyone, I'm Potato! Today is my first day as a volunteer at the Food For Good Recycling Centre. I carry a little diary notebook, ready to record everything here. At 6am, the first truckload of food waste arrives!

2The volunteer big brothers and sisters pour buckets of food waste onto the sorting table. They carefully pick out plastic bags, toothpicks, and tissues, leaving only pure food waste. Potato writes: "Sorting requires care — no impurities in the food waste."

3The sorted food waste goes into processing machines. Potato watches giant machines grind and ferment the food waste. A worker explains: "This food waste will become two things — liquid fertilizer and solid compost."

4On the last page of his diary, Potato draws a picture: food waste in → sorting → processing → fertilizer → growing vegetables → back to the kitchen. Potato writes: "This is the circular journey of food waste! Not a drop wasted."

Potato Peel Makeover

💡

Potato skins are rich in dietary fiber and potassium — roasted crispy, they make a healthy snack!

1At the recycling centre, Potato sees a big pile of potato peels being thrown away. "Such nice potato peels just thrown away? What a waste!" Potato decides to find new uses for them.

2Potato searches online and discovers that potato skins are actually very nutritious! He immediately finds his chef friend to develop recipes together. The chef says: "Clean potato peels, with a little olive oil and salt, roasted in the oven until crispy — a delicious snack!"

3Potato and the chef demonstrate for everyone. When the golden crispy potato peels come out of the oven, the aroma is incredible! Children rush to taste: "Wow! So crispy and fragrant! I didn't know potato peels could be this delicious!"

4From then on, no one throws away potato peels — they turn them into healthy snacks instead. Potato feels proud: he proved that "nothing is waste" — with creativity, everything has value!

Potato's Superpower

💡

Biogas from food waste anaerobic digestion can generate enough electricity to light up a whole house!

1One night, the recycling centre loses power. Potato is scared and hides in a corner. Suddenly, a green glow shoots out from the food waste processing machine. Potato curiously walks over to look...

2It turns out the food waste inside the sealed reactor is being processed by microorganisms, producing glowing biogas! When Potato touches the biogas, he feels a powerful force surge into his body — Potato transforms!

3Potato becomes "Energy Hero"! His body emits green lightning, and with a point of his finger, he can light up a bulb. The children are thrilled: "Potato has superpowers! Food waste really can generate electricity!"

4Potato uses his superpower to restore light to the blacked-out community. He tells everyone: "Every bucket of food waste contains energy. With proper treatment, food waste is our super energy source!" From then on, everyone diligently recycles food waste.

Potato Returns to the Earth

💡

Compost from food waste is nutrient-rich and can grow more vegetables — completing the cycle of food life!

1Winter arrives, and Potato feels his body beginning to age. He looks at the garden outside the window with a wish: "I want to use my last strength to do something meaningful."

2Potato asks the volunteer sister to put him in the compost bin. Deeply moved, she gently places Potato into the warm compost pile. Potato closes his eyes, feeling microorganisms tenderly working on his body.

3A few months later, Potato has become dark, fertile soil. The volunteers spread this compost over the garden. Spring arrives, and tender green sprouts push through the soil that was once Potato — radishes, lettuce, and tomatoes!

4Though Potato is gone, his life continues in the most beautiful way. Fresh vegetables are sent to the kitchen and become delicious dishes. When children eat their veggies, they remember: "Potato helped grow this dish." A perfect food cycle is complete.
