EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

Three sections

The programme spans three Hong Kong Girl Guides sections, allowing members of different ages to learn about food appreciation and food-waste reduction step by step. Each section has its own cloth badge, awarded on completion of that section's curriculum.

About this sectionThis section focuses on basic awareness and personal habits. The Knowledge component covers foundational concepts such as the functions of food, what food waste is, its environmental impact, and how to reduce food waste in daily life (e.g. at home). Members also learn about food banks and community kitchens. The Practical component involves a two-week food-waste reduction plan, recording daily household food waste, and encouraging three friends or family members to sign a pledge.

  2. Guide

About this sectionThis section expands to societal and technical dimensions, requiring deeper thinking. The Knowledge component covers Hong Kong's daily food-waste data, sources, and reasons for its high volume; examines causes and reduction measures in schools and large commercial institutions (e.g. shopping centres, hotels); and explores food-waste processing technology such as compost bins, DIY food-waste boxes, and electric disposers. The Practical component goes beyond personal recording to include broader household or campus waste-reduction actions.

  3. Ranger

About this sectionThis is the highest section, focusing on community outreach and leadership. Members are expected not only to practise food-waste reduction themselves but to lead and organise promotional activities, spreading the "food appreciation" message to the wider community. The Knowledge component covers global food-waste causes, food-waste processing technologies (e.g. biogas, electric disposers) and their feasibility, food safety issues, and analysis of Hong Kong's solid waste policies. The Practical component requires writing a community outreach proposal covering waste analysis, strategy, quantitative assessment, and sustainability.
