What they learn

Each section's curriculum is split into Knowledge and Practical components, taught through classes and activities. Detailed content is set by the HKGGA Programme Department.

  1. Brownie

    Knowledge

    • (a) What are the functions of food? List three.
    • (b) What is food waste?
    • (c) Where does food waste come from? List two eating habits that generate a lot of food waste.
    • (d) List three environmental problems caused by food waste.
    • (e) How can you reduce food waste? List three methods you can do.
    • (f) List one method to handle food waste at home.
    • (g) Name one food bank and one community kitchen.

    Practical

    • (a) Implement a plan to reduce food waste over two weeks, and record the weight of food waste generated at home each day.
    • (b) Mobilise three friends or family members to implement food waste reduction, and have them sign a pledge.
  2. Guide

    Knowledge

    • (a) List the average daily amount of food waste produced in Hong Kong and its sources. Why is Hong Kong's food waste higher than other countries? List four reasons.
    • (b) List three environmental problems caused by food waste.
    • (c) How can you reduce food waste and other solid waste? List four methods.
    • (d) Explain the causes of food waste in Hong Kong schools. Some Hong Kong students need to stay at school for lunch. What measures does the government have to reduce and handle food waste? Give two examples and explain how effective those measures are.
    • (e) List three methods for large commercial institutions (such as shopping malls or hotels) to reduce and handle food waste.
    • (f) Explain the principle of a food waste bin, and list the steps for making a homemade food waste box or the principle of an electric food waste machine.
    • (g) Name one food bank and one community kitchen.

    Practical

    • (a) Record the weight of food waste generated at home over one week, review how much of that food waste could have been avoided, set goals and methods to reduce food waste, and then implement those methods for one week. After completion, compare the weight of food waste generated before and after, and evaluate whether the measures are feasible.
    • (b) Mobilise five friends or family members to implement food waste reduction, and have them sign a pledge.
  3. Ranger

    Knowledge

    • 1. Explain the causes of food waste in developing and developed regions.
    • 2. Introduce the effectiveness of using food waste for biogas generation, and evaluate the feasibility of biogas in Hong Kong considering the required funding, technology, and environment.
    • 3. Explain the principle of an electric food waste machine, and list its advantages and disadvantages.
    • 4. When food waste is made into fish feed or pig feed, what should be considered regarding food safety and quality? When using food waste in Hong Kong, considering the scale of agriculture, pig farming, and fish farming, what should be taken into account?
    • 5. What measures does the Hong Kong government currently have to reduce and handle food waste?
    • 6. Hong Kong's solid waste problem is imminent, with landfills nearing capacity, but finding suitable sites for new landfills is very difficult. Some opinions suggest considering the construction of incinerators, but there are also many opposing views. Considering the pros and cons, do you think Hong Kong should build incinerators? If so, where do you think they should be located? If not, how should solid waste be managed?

    Practical

    • 1. Write a proposal to promote green eating, food donation, and food waste recycling in your community. The proposal should include: (a) an analysis of how much food waste is generated in the community, how much can be avoided, and how much is unavoidable; (b) strategies, procedures, tools, methods, funding, and manpower; (c) a quantitative assessment of the actual reduction in food waste and the number of beneficiaries of the recycled food; (d) the sustainability of the plan, ensuring that the implemented plan and methods can continue to reduce food waste in the long term, and establishing standards for operational procedures.
